We should not worry about high drop-out rates in MOOCs

High drop-out rates in MOOCs should be viewed as an aspect of their open nature and should not be of any concern. The option to get a badge or some kind of credential from them will be tied to measurable outcomes that will require continued participation. However, if someone wants to participate for personal enrichment and only participates for the first few weeks that is fine. This experience may encourage them to take the course again in a more serious manner later on while trying to complete a credential.

If MOOC providers are going to bundle a bunch of information into one delivery package, then implicit in that is that the package has value and completing it is important. If it isn't, then the individual pieces should be unbundled (ala Kahn Academy or Lynda.com) and left to stand on their own.
